Everton Considers £10m Release Clause for Sam Johnstone Amid Manchester United Interest in Pickford
Everton Football Club is reportedly considering triggering a £10 million release clause in Sam Johnstone's Crystal Palace contract. This move comes in response to Manchester United's ongoing interest in Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Although Everton has not yet received an enquiry for Pickford from Manchester United, the Red Devils are known to be in search of a new goalkeeper this summer. David de Gea, Manchester United's current goalkeeper, is increasingly expected to leave the club. United confirmed last week that discussions were ongoing over a new contract, aiming to reduce de Gea's weekly wages from £375,000 to £200,000.
Reports suggest that Manchester United could make a £45 million bid for Pickford, despite the England No 1 signing a new contract with the Merseyside club in February. If Pickford is lured away to Old Trafford this summer, Everton may turn to Crystal Palace's Sam Johnstone as a contingency.
Johnstone, who has three years remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park, reportedly has a £10 million release clause. The 30-year-old goalkeeper forced his way into the Crystal Palace team in the latter stages of the season, starting the last nine matches of the Premier League campaign. Under Roy Hodgson's management, Crystal Palace enjoyed an impressive run, pulling away from the relegation battle.
Johnstone's form led to a recall to Gareth Southgate's England squad, and he has been on the bench for the Three Lions Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia. With three England caps to his name, Johnstone joined Crystal Palace last summer on a free transfer from West Brom. He had impressed for the Baggies during the 2020-21 Premier League season but was unable to prevent the club from suffering relegation to the Championship.
